Gilding is a crucial stage in the processing of frame mouldings. It not only adds brightness and refinement to the final product but also makes each frame unique. In our workshop, we use mission gilding, a precise and versatile technique, along with materials such as imitation gold leaf, copper, and real silver.
The Steps of Mission Gilding
Surface Preparation
Before starting the gilding process, the mouldings are carefully cleaned and sanded to ensure a smooth and even surface.
Application of the Mission Adhesive
Mission is a special liquid adhesive that ensures optimal adhesion of the metal leaf.
It is applied evenly to the surface to be gilded using cotton or spray techniques.
After application, it is left to dry for a specific period until it reaches the “tacky” stage, meaning it becomes sticky enough to hold the metal leaf properly.
Laying the Leaf
Once the mission adhesive is ready, the leaf is applied.
We use:
- Imitation gold leaf for a warm and elegant glow.
- Copper for a rustic and original effect.
- Genuine silver for a sophisticated and modern look.
The leaf is carefully placed with the help of special spatulas, ensuring it adheres perfectly to the surface.
Finishing
After the application, excess leaf is removed with specific tools to achieve a clean and uniform finish.
